FAQ

Answers to the questions we get most: what is free, what the stores cost, how to support the project.

Free, open source, and the stores

Why is Punktfunk paid on the App Store and Google Play when the website calls it free?

Punktfunk is free and open source. The code is MIT/Apache 2.0 licensed, and the client you get in the stores is the same one you can download for free from the install page — the .apk, the .ipa, the .dmg — or build yourself.

The store copies cost a few euros. That is the convenient route — the store installs the app and keeps it updated — and it is how the project is funded: the store fees and the developer accounts come out of it, the rest goes into the work. Nothing is locked behind the price.

Is the store version different from the free download?

No. Same app, same features, same releases. The store copy only updates itself.

How do I install the free version on an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV?

The .ipa has to be sideloaded: with AltStore or Sideloadly, or through Xcode with an Apple developer account. Apple TV takes the Xcode route only. For most people the App Store copy is the practical way.

Can I support the project without buying it in a store?

Yes: on Ko-fi, or by contributing to the source.
